Our collective response to AIDS has allowed advancement in medical treatment since the disease first came to prominence in the 1980’s. Society has made huge strides in the last 30 years in regards to awareness, education, prevention, and treatment. However, there is still a lot of work to do, and amfAR is a key organization that continues the fight.
amfAR has been at the forefront of the fight against AIDS since 1985, raising hundreds of millions of dollars towards research and programs that have yielded significant results. Victories include innovative treatments, effective programs to prevent the spread of the disease, and addressing the international epidemic.
The amfAR New York Gala has been a staple of both New York Fashion Week and amfAR’s fundraising efforts since the event first started in 1998. This year, Harvey Weinstein was honored for his efforts towards combating the disease. Many other A-List celebrities attended the big event, including Jay Z, Robert DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Reynolds, and Uma Thurman.
Over $2 million was raised in just one night at the big event thanks to donations and auctions of unique items such as original Andy Warhol prints and Harry Winston earrings. The Gala received top coverage in fashion and mainstream publications, bringing lots of attention to the cause and the charity. Their next events will be: Hong Kong in March, Sao Paulo, Brazil in April, and Cap d’Antibes, France in May. For more on amfAR, visit www.amfar.org, and follow them on Twitter and Instagram at @amfar.
